ARMA-NCR Ottawa Chapter is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of its members since 1971. In particular, we would like to give special acknowledgment to the following individuals:
John Moss Smith
A few of his contributions to ARMA include being Chapter President for two terms between 1978 and 1980; recipient of Chapter Member of the Year Award in 1978 & in 1981. In 1982, he was one of the recipients of the Special Achievement Award. He went on to become an active member on the ARMA International Board of Directors as Region VIII Vice-President between 1982 & 1986, as Executive Vice-President in 1987, as President in 1988 and as Chairman of the Board in 1989. Thank you John. Your leadership has served this Chapter well and is appreciated by all of us. By the way, we miss your limericks!
Susan Dalati
Susan's contributions include being Chapter President for two terms between 1992 and 1994; she was the recipient of the Chapter Member of the Year Award in 1994. Susan has served on the ARMA International Board of Directors as Region VIII Vice President between 1994 and 1998. In addition, Susan has been active on several committees at the national & international level. In 2001 she was the recipient of the Ted Ferrier Award of Excellence .
Ted Ferrier
Ted's skills as a 'statesman' are second to none. His quiet support to association members, at both professional and personal levels over the years, has been an inspiration to many of us. In addition, his role as the 'great gander' has helped foster a team spirit that is so critical to the success of the Chapter. Ted was a founding member. He served as Chapter President for two terms between 1976 & 1978. He was the recipient of the Chapter Member of the Year Award in 1983 and was one of the recipients of the Special Achievement Award in 1987. Ted was the first recipient of the Ted Ferrier Award of Excellence in 1998. Thank you, Ted, for always being there for us and for teaching all of us the true value friendship and respect for each other.
Claire Lee
Claire's commitment to the Chapter is reflected in the number of years she has been a member of the Board of Directors since she became a member in 1976. Claire's sense of team work and personal commitment to excellence has had a positive impact on the chapter's successes over the years. Claire introduced the poem ' Team Work - the Sense of a Goose' when she became Chapter President in 1996. Her outstanding contributions to the Records & Information Management community were formally recognized in 2000 when she was awarded the Ted Ferrier Award of Excellence . Highlights (OR Major Accomplishments)
Over its thirty-year history, the chapter has placed a high priority on professional development and education. Some major accomplishments and special events are highlighted below.
2010-present
2011
40th Anniversary celebration held in conjunction with Fall IM Days in November.
ARMA Chapter is declared ARMA Canada Conference host in 2014
New Chapter website launched.
New Director of Social Media board position established.
Twitter account is launched.
2010
Spring Seminar and Fall IM Days workshops held.
Partnership established with Montreal Chapter for potential collaboration on future events.
Facebook page for ARMA-NCR is launched.
2000 - 2009
2009
Board members attending the ARMA Canada conference in Edmonton make a submission to host the conference in 2012 along with the Chapters from Newfoundland and Labrador and British Columbia.
The Chapter holds a Spring Seminar in May featuring plenary speakers and a series of workshops with over 80 participants.
The Chapter coordinates with AIIM to offer educational sessions to the membership in Ottawa.
2006-2008
A new procedures guide is completed in April of 2007. The procedures guide, previously made available on the Chapter website, is an important recruitment tool for the Board; other chapters adopt this as a template and adapt for their own use.
This was a period of growth as there were an increasing number of program meetings and educational events during this time. The Chapter also experienced an increase in the size of the membership. A membership survey conducted in 2008 provided valuable input into long range planning.
2005
A new governance structure is established after consultation with the membership.
The Chapter achieves financial stability following a few challenging years.
2004
The Chapter receives a congratulatory message from the Premier of Ontario during RIM month.
2002-2003
ARMA-NCR is the recipient of Chapter of the Year Award for Large-Size Chapter (Chapter President: Denis Gélineau)
Introduced a bursary award to the Records and Information Technology Program of Cambrian College in Sudbury
Launched a Chapter intranet for board members under the leadership of Denis R. Gélineau
2001
Celebrated 30th Anniversary
Twinned with the Hawaii Chapter as a second sister chapter under the leadership of Denis R. Gélineau from Ottawa and Brian A. Moriki from Hawaii
Introduced an electronic document management solution with Houston Software Company under the leadership of Denis R. Gélineau
Introduced an Information Management Business Community working group under the leadership of Denis R. Gélineau & Brian Stinson
Launched a revised Chapter website under the leadership of Denis R. Gélineau

Published 1st e-newsletter
Introduced in collaboration with the University of Toronto the basic and intermediate certificate courses

1970s
1977
Chapter took a lead role in the development of a basic introductory course in records management at Algonquin College; this initiative grew into a highly successful five-semester program that was aimed at preparing students to meet the requirements of the CRM examination.
1975
American Records Management Association merged with the Association of Records Executives & Administrators to form the Association of Records Managers & Administrators (ARMA)
On July 1, 1975, the Ottawa Chapter received its Charter within the new ARMA
1974
Hosted the 1st Annual Spring Training Seminar at the Talisman Hotel in April
